Strengthening maritime security and ecosystem protection: Fiskistofa’s efforts against illegal fishing
Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing is a growing global concern, threatening marine biodiversity and the livelihoods of those who depend on sustainable fishing.

In Iceland, Fiskistofa (the Directorate of Fisheries) is taking decisive action against IUU fishing by deploying the DeltaQuad Evo. As an industry leading surveillance drone, Evo enhances enforcement capabilities by offering fully autonomous missions, maximum insight, and operational flexibility.

Fiskistofa is committed to combating illegal fishing practices, and plays a vital role in safeguarding Iceland’s fishing industry—one of the main pillars of the country’s national economy. However, Iceland’s vast and remote waters present a significant challenge for fisheries enforcement. Traditional monitoring methods, such as manned aircraft and patrol boats, are limited in coverage and response time. Fiskistofa required a solution that could operate efficiently in harsh weather conditions, capture high quality images and provide long flight hours.

Responding to maritime challenges to safeguard Iceland's fisheries

To overcome these challenges, Fiskistofa integrated DeltaQuad Evo Enterprise into its operations. This marks a significant advancement in Fiskistofa's surveillance capabilities by enabling comprehensive trawler monitoring and effective evidence gathering.

In a critical mission in February, the Evo was equipped with a surveillance camera that provided the long-range capabilities essential to Fiskistofa’s operations. The 80x zoom capability allowed authorities to inspect vessels from a safe distance, while the thermal imaging ensured clear visibility during low-light conditions. With Evo’s extended flight time, Fiskistofa could monitor activities for 3.5 hours and gather crucial evidence to build strong enforcement cases. This long endurance allowed them to make informed decisions based on a complete surveillance overview.

“Getting the drones into the operation fisheries in Iceland was a whole different new level.”

Solmundur Gisli Bergsveinsson, Fiskistofa

Since deploying the DeltaQuad Evo, Fiskistofa has achieved notable improvements in fisheries surveillance, including their increased ability to identify and document illegal fishing operations and enhanced evidence collection.
